Advantages and Disadvantage of Edge
Edge computing is one of the latest technologies to hit the industry. There are many questions that arise with edge computing: What is edge computing? cloud v. edge? Do I need edge if I have cloud computing? What are the benefits of edge computing? The list can go on…

I recently read an article, 3 Advantages (And 1 Disadvantage) Of Edge Computing, in Forbes that covers some of these questions. The article gives a brief description of edge computing and then highlights some of the benefits and one potential disadvantage.
Here’s a wrap up of the key advantages and one disadvantage according to the Forbes article:
- Saving bandwidth. Only the most important data gets streamed to the cloud and less important data gets discarded therefore reducing bandwidth.
- Reducing latency. Lag time is reduced when data is processed on the spot. This allows for critical data to analyzed and decisions to be made immediately.
- Enhancing security and privacy. Less data being sent to the cloud and over the network reduces the security risks.
- Dismissing potentially useful data. To save bandwidth and reduce latency, data may be discarded when it actually has value.
